| | Haan Triumphs at Quality Drink Awards 2006 |
| date: Aug 9th 2006 10:54
In true David and Goliath style, having been shortlisted against two fine reds from the Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference range, the small but perfectly formed South Australian producer Haan Wines was declared the clear winner by Harper’s own Christian
during this year’s Quality Drink Conference 2006 on Thursday 15 June, held at the London Marriott Grosvenor Square.
Commenting that the standard of this year’s entries has been very high, the judges notes on the multi award-winning Haan Estate Wilhelmus 2002 included:
“A classic Bordeaux blend from Australia with huge power and complexity. Soft, ripe tannins and a bold finish.”
Rated 91-94 points by Robert Parker (Source: Wine Advocate 155, October 2004), the Wilhelmus 2002 offers style, character and elegance with abundant bramble, raspberry and cassis flavours and length to reward. Exclusively imported into the UK by fine wine merchant, The Cellaret Wineportfolio, this much sought-after wine currently has listings in Boisdales City and Belgravia.
Retailing at £20.99, there are a mere 50 cases of the Haan Wilhelmus 2002 left on the planet!
On receiving the award, Mike Ritchie MW, Director of Agency Wines at The Cellaret said:
“The Quality Drinks Award 2006 has given Haan Estate Wilhelmus 2002 an exceptional honour and follows on from the Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Trophy for “Best Blended Red Wine” that the wine achieved at the IWSC 2005. Haan wines were also awarded the Australian Producer of the Year award at the very same competition.”
With the strong Haan philosophy established right from the very beginning (when Hans and Fransien Haan took over the historic 18 hectare 100 year old Hanenhof Vineyard in the 1990s), each variety is picked at its own distinct maturity so as to maximise the flavour. Haan Wines has always been managed as a true wine estate, with a combination of top quality winemaking and a clear understanding of wine excellence being the keys to its success.
