EU airlines can lead world on climate change, says Walsh

date: Jul 4th 2006 12:02

Europe s airlines have a real opportunity to show the world how to limit aviation s impact on climate change, Willie Walsh, British Airways chief executive, said today.

He said British Airways recognised its environmental responsibilities and was leading the way in promoting carbon trading as the most efficient and environmentally effective way of curbing aircraft emissions.

---- do not remove it is spacer ---- He called for the European Commission to produce simple and practical proposals for the inclusion of airlines in the EU s existing emissions trading system. The Commission is expected to publish draft legislation in the autumn following a vote by the European Parliament on Tuesday (July 4).

---- do not remove it is spacer ---- Mr Walsh said the treatment of aviation should be the same as for other industries.

---- do not remove it is spacer ---- Climate change is a global problem - across all industries, all countries and all areas of human activity. We want to play our part in a solution.

---- do not remove it is spacer ---- But the role of aviation in climate change must be seen in context. If you closed down every airline that operates from the UK, you would reduce global CO2 emissions by just 0.1 per cent. You will not solve global warming by singling out aviation, he added.

---- do not remove it is spacer ---- While it is crucial that aviation takes action on emissions, the notion that flying is a selfish, anti-social activity that single-handedly threatens planetary catastrophe bears no relation to the evidence.

---- do not remove it is spacer ---- In a statement, Mr Walsh said: We now have a real opportunity in Europe to establish an emissions trading scheme involving airlines which could become a template for the world.

---- do not remove it is spacer ---- He went on: A scheme would enable airlines effectively to pay for the carbon reductions achieved by companies in industries with greater scope for cutting carbon dioxide output.

---- do not remove it is spacer ---- It would give all industries a financial incentive to be as carbon-conscious and fuel-efficient as possible.
